As your hot water tank ages, it is at risk for rust and cracks, both of which can lead to a leak. A hot water heater can hold several gallons of water, so when it leaks, a great deal of damage can be done. If you notice that your hot water tank is leaking, you may find yourself wondering what to do. Here are the steps you should follow as soon as you notice a hot water tank leak.

Shut Off the Hot Water Heater

The very first thing that you will want to do is shut off the hot water tank. If you have an electric water heater, turn it off and unplug it. If you have a gas water heater, turn it to the off position and then turn the gas valve to the off position.

Turn the Water Shut-Off Valve

Once the hot water tank is shut off, find the water shut-off valve. Most hot water tanks should have a water shut-off valve connected to them that shuts off the water at this source. If you cannot locate this, you will have to turn off your main water valve.

Drain the Hot Water Tank

Once the hot water tank is turned off and no more water is flowing into the tank, you will want to drain the tank. You can either attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank or use buckets to catch water from the drain valve. Draining the tank helps to ensure that the tank is empty and that no more water will leak out of the tank.

Clean Up As Much Water as Possible

After the tank is empty, you can begin the cleanup process. You will want to clean up and remove as much water as possible, as quickly as possible. You may wish to bring in dehumidifiers, open windows, or run fans to help dry the space. Mold can begin to grow in as little as 24 hours, so it is important to remove moisture quickly.

Call in the Professionals

Once you have removed as much water as possible, it is time to call in the professionals. If a large amount of water has flooded your space, your carpet and padding are soaked, your drywall is wet, or wood has gotten wet, you may want to call in a flood damage repair company. They can remove water and restore your home. In addition to this, you will want to call in a plumber to replace your hot water tank as quickly as possible to ensure you have hot water.
