Most people open and close their fridge dozens of times over the course of even a single day. With all those trips to the fridge, it can be easy to forget that your fridge doesn't take care of itself and needs a little attention every now and again. Luckily, taking care of your fridge, as long as you remember to do it, is a relatively easy process.

Clean the Gasket

Around the edge of the door is black plastic that has about three folds in it. This is called a gasket. It is a simple part but plays an important role in how your fridge functions. The gasket is what ensures that your door creates an airtight seal with your fridge when you shut the door. The gasket is responsible for keeping the food in your fridge and freezer nice and cold.

You want to take care of the gasket. Over time, crumbs and spills can gather in the little folds of soft plastic. To clean the gasket, all you need is a soft cloth to go around the edge of your fridge and clean things up.

By cleaning the gasket on a regular basis, you will be able to notice changes to the gasket. Is it starting to feel dry? Are there cracks in it? When you notice signs of damage, you'll want to replace the gasket. It is better to replace it as soon as it starts to show signs of wear then it is to wait for your fridge to not keep things as cold as it should.

Clean the Inside of The Fridge

Next, inside your fridge, you have various shelves and drawers. In order to keep all the shelves and drawers working correctly, you need to keep the inside of the fridge clean. Built-up spills and junk can damage the parts inside of your fridge.

Just take a baby wipe or a wet cloth and wipe off the shelves and drawers. You don't even need to clean everything all at once; you can clean off a different shelf or section of your fridge each day until the entire unit is clean.

Clean the Coils

All fridges have coils. These coils help keep your fridge cool. The coils are either located on the back of your fridge, or on the underside of your fridge. As these coils help keep things cool and pull in air, they can attract dust as well. Pull out your fridge, and vacuum around your coils. This small maintenance step will help keep your coils functioning properly for a longer time.

Keep your fridge in great condition by wiping down the gasket, cleaning the inside of the fridge, and cleaning the coils. Just keeping things clean will extend the overall life of your fridge and help prevent more major repairs.
