Emergency water damage repair is something you can trust your home restoration specialist to do for you. However, when you're first caught in a water emergency in your home, it's hard to know what to do. Whether it's a burst main line or a flood, here are the things you should do regarding your water emergency so water damage restoration can occur safely.

Locate the water source if you can

If the water flooding your home has an easy source to locate, find this source and see if you can shut it off. This is most effective if the water damage is coming from a leaking appliance, water faucet, overactive toilet, or a burst pipe where the main water line can be shut off. If you can locate the water source but it's not safe to turn it off because the water is tainted, hot, or otherwise dangerous, make a mental note of the water source and let emergency personnel know right away so they can quickly find this water source and assist you.

Vacate the property

Gather your family, pets, and personal emergency belongings and documents and leave your home immediately as you call for emergency assistance. Any water in the home can cause damage or injury due to electrical shock, drowning, or being exposed to dangerous waters.

Emergency belongings and documents include homeowners insurance policies, money, ID cards, money cards, and car keys. You can return to your home when your water damage restoration company specialist says it's safe to do so.

Call your homeowner's insurance agent

While every homeowner's insurance policy is different, your water damage in the home might be covered. Or, you might be able to get into alternate housing like a hotel until your home's water damage restoration has been completed and have it cost you nothing more than a deductible. Your homeowner's insurance agent will keep you updated on how your claim is going and prepare you for the next steps in getting your home back to move-in condition again.

Notify family and friends

Having a water emergency in your home can leave you without food and shelter for a while, and friends and family can be of assistance by lending you some of their belongings or clothing or even helping you out financially. You can even have family and friends help you move back into your home when it's deemed safe to live in and use their help to get your home back together again after it's been cleaned.
